This is not a model or a scaled replica. It is a real flanged, fixed tubesheet heat exchanger manufactured according to ASME code and TEMA standards, TEMA Type BEW configuration, with a 12-inch nominal diameter carbon steel shell, copper tubes, brass tube sheet, and carbon steel cross-baffles. The steel elliptical flanged heads are secured with 16 seven-eighths-inch stud and bolt sets, identical to the fastener configuration on a working industrial heat exchanger. The unit is mounted on a cleaned structural steel and tube support stand on a rolling cart with heavy-duty locking casters for easy positioning in a training facility.
The system includes several gasket sets for training purposes, allowing learners to practice the full range of routine maintenance tasks a technician would perform on a heat exchanger in an operating facility. This includes routine inspections, gasket replacement, tube inspections, and emergency repairs to or replacement of leaking tubes. For programs that need to extend heat exchanger training into process control and instrumentation applications, the Heat Exchanger Process Control Trainer is a full-sized, working fluid system that provides hands-on training in temperature measurement and control as it relates to industrial heat exchanger operation. The system includes four industrial-quality heat exchangers: a plate-type exchanger and three varieties of shell and tube exchangers including U-tube, single-pass, and multi-pass straight-flow configurations.
A system of solenoid valves and piping manifolds allows selection of individual heat exchangers for individual study and also enables flow reversal to create both concurrent and counter-current flow configurations, giving learners direct, observable experience with how flow arrangement affects thermal performance. Four digital temperature meters provide real-time measurement at each exchanger using modular RTDs on both tube-side and shell-side flow. Two immersion process heaters and industrial-quality pneumatic control valves on both the hot and utility legs allow for the creation and study of dynamic temperature control loops using feedback and feed-forward control methods. The system is expandable with more than 90 optional instruments and control components.
