What is the EDU MiLL?

The EDU MiLL is Levil Technology's education-focused compact CNC milling machine, designed and manufactured in the United States at Levil's facility in Oviedo, Florida. It is built around the same servo-controlled, low-inertia design philosophy that defines the broader Levil lineup, delivering the precision and responsiveness of a production CNC machine in a footprint scaled for classroom and lab deployment.

The machine features 130W brushless AC servo motors on all three axes running at 6,000 RPM, Size 15 linear guideways, C7 precision ground ball screws, and a high-speed 2.2kW spindle reaching 24,000 RPM with ER-20 taper, ceramic bearings, and air cooling. Spindle runout is less than 0.01mm, ensuring the kind of surface finish and dimensional accuracy that genuine CNC milling skill development requires.

The steel enclosure features a large door for easy access to the machining area, large side windows for monitoring machining processes during operation, and a safety door sensor for student protection. The machine fits through a standard doorway and is available with an optional stand with casters for easy relocation between classrooms or labs.

Control options

The EDU MiLL is available with a choice of FANUC or Levil proprietary control. The FANUC control option places students on the industry-standard CNC platform aligned with FANUC CNC CERT certification, giving them the G-code programming, control navigation, and machine operation experience that transfers directly to production machining environments. The Levil proprietary control provides an accessible Windows-based programming environment suited to introductory CNC instruction where ease of use and reduced learning curve are priorities. Both control options are fully functional for all milling operations the EDU MiLL supports.

The 3D printing add-on

One of the most distinctive features of the EDU MiLL is its optional Fused Deposition Modeling 3D printing system, which converts the milling machine into a full FDM printer through a magnetic attachment system that requires no permanent modification to the machine. The 3D printing add-on is available in single-head and dual-head configurations.

The single-head extrusion system, available with the Levil control, uses a 0.4mm nozzle with a heating element to 260 degrees and a heated bed to 90 degrees. The dual-head extrusion system, available with both FANUC and Levil controls, uses dual extruders with 0.4mm nozzles, a heating element to 300 degrees, and a heated bed to 90 degrees. Both systems share a build volume of 160 x 260 x 110mm with a direct drive extruder system, a heated build plate of 220 x 220mm, sealed material storage within the machine enclosure, and a minimum layer resolution of 100 microns.

Printable materials include standard soft materials: PLA, ABS, PETG, TPU, and many more. With Levil's optional kiln system, the EDU MiLL extends into metal 3D printing using metal-filled FDM filaments that are printed on the machine, then debinded and sintered in the kiln to produce fully dense metal parts.

Levil's optional kiln systems enable a complete metal 3D printing workflow on the EDU MiLL platform in three steps: design and print the part in metal-filled filament, debind the green part, and sinter in the kiln to produce a fully dense metal part. Printable metals include copper, bronze, stainless steel 316L, stainless steel 17-4, aluminum 6061, carbon fiber, and titanium 64-5.

Two kiln configurations are available. The Starter Kiln is a compact single-phase unit running on 120VAC, 15A with a 0.13 cubic foot chamber suitable for small prototype and educational parts production. The Pro Kiln is a larger single-phase unit running on 240VAC, 45A with a 2.4 cubic foot chamber suitable for higher-volume production and larger parts. Both reach a maximum temperature of 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit (1,370 degrees Celsius) with electric heating and automatic gas injection.

This metal 3D printing capability brings a technology previously accessible only to programs with expensive dedicated metal printing equipment into the same machine and budget as a standard CNC mill, making the EDU MiLL one of the most versatile educational manufacturing platforms available.

What students learn on the EDU MiLL

The EDU MiLL supports a comprehensive curriculum covering CNC milling, additive manufacturing, and for programs that add the metal printing kiln, complete additive metal manufacturing from design through sintered part. CNC milling skills include control navigation and program management, G-code milling program structure and syntax, work coordinate system setup and offset establishment, tool length compensation and cutter radius compensation, spindle speed and feed rate selection, milling operations including face milling, contour milling, pocket milling, and drilling, canned cycle use, part fixturing and workholding, and dimensional inspection of machined parts. 3D printing skills include FDM printer setup and operation, slicing software use and print parameter optimization, material selection for different application requirements, and for metal printing programs, the complete print-debind-sinter workflow and metal part finishing.

Software compatibility

The EDU MiLL is compatible with SolidCAM, with a 90-day trial of SolidCAM Xpress and SolidCAM's 3D Pro package available with purchase. SmartCAM is also compatible, with a 30-day trial of the Advanced Milling or Production Turning Package available. Both provide G-code post-processing for the EDU MiLL, connecting CAD design through CAM toolpath generation to machine output.

Levil Technology includes a one-day training class at no charge with the purchase of any machine for buyers who can travel to Levil's facility in Oviedo, Florida. On-site training by a Levil representative is available for programs that prefer training delivered at their facility.
